Thor Ragnarok (2017)

The third chapter in the Thor Trilogy makes for the very best Thor movie yet.

Thor. everyone’s favorite Avenger is back in his third solo film, and this is directed by Taika Waiti best known for his fascinating comedies like What We Do In The Shadows. In this movie Thor and Loki has to ally up with The Incredible Hulk to save Asgards from The Goddess of Death Hela and the impending Ragnarok.

Now, where do we begin, well the Thor movies have a tendency of not really being good. Compared to Iron Man and the Captain America trilogies Chris Hemsworths God of Thunder had two movies that were the ultimate definition of mediocre. They were filled with cheap CGI and bad scripts. The only thing that made them watchable was the great casting of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston.

The casting is amazing. Tom Hiddleston as Loki is one of the best things Marvel has done  and Chris Hemsworth as Thor is also splendid. Both are tremendous actors and the chemistry that balances between them is just remarkable. Cate Blanchett portrays Hela and is one of the best villains the Marvel Cinematic Universe has ever had. Mark Ruffalo returns as everyones favorite scientist and his performance as both Hulk and Bruce Banner really gives him a unique story arc into Infinity Wars.

The cinematography is done by Javier Aguirresarobe, and the spanish master of the camera has an attention to details few other cinematographers can match. The details in the fight scenes between Thor and Hulk are quite extraordinary.

Thor is supposed to be a funny comic book. Very vaguely based upon Norse Mythology and the two first ones failed to do justice to the comedic parts of Marvel, but luckily Taika Waiti is the master of comedy and the result is a movie with quick punch lines, and silly jokes just as it should be. This movie has like three scenes on Earth and the rest in the Cosmos, which is what Thor should be, a space adventure.

A movie like this needs good CGI, and the visual effects are done by Industrial Light and Magic Studios and what a job. The visuals are on the same level as Doctor STrange, who also makes an appearance in the film with his magic.

Thor Ragnarok is the 17th movie of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and we have come a long way since the beginning back in 2008, and where the future goes from Thor here is going to be interesting to see. Ragnarok stirs up so much of the Thor Legacy and the result is not just the best Thor movie, one of the best Marvel movies to date.

Score: 9/10
